10 Strategies for Increasing Happiness

Catherine Sanderson did a talk which had a part where she discusses 10 strategies for increasing happiness and it looks like a great start toward embracing happiness.

  1. Keep a gratitude journal
    • List 3 things you are thankful for right now  not in the future
  2. Make a gratitude visit
    • Someone who has had a major impact on your life
    • Write letter to influential person in your life
    • Then read it in front of the person
    • Don't wait until it is their eulogy
  3. Find your strengths & find ways to use them
  4. Read a book you love
  5. Smile (even when you aren't happy)
  6. Change your behavior
    • Get enough sleep
    • Exercise
    • Spend time outside
  7. Perform random acts of kindness
    • Volunteer
    • Donate to charity
    • Give a gift to a friend
  8. Spend money on the right things
    • Yes - On experiences
    • No - On belongings
  9. Avoid comparisons
    •  People feel less good about their lives when comparing to others
    • "Comparison is the thief of joy". ~Theodore Roosevelt
  10. Build and maintain close relationships
    • Takes time, energy, & effort but absolutely worth it
