Job Search

Shelby indicated on an e-mail that this is what she would do first.

Think of 3 words that best describe you and the skills/traits you possess that a company would want. Narrowing down who you are in 3 words is difficult but it helps employers focus on the most important things about you. These 3 words become your marketing slogan.
  • To get her 3 words, we sat down with a big sheet of paper taped to a window in my dining room and did a brainstorming session to find her 3 professional skills/traits that described her. We used this same brainstorming sheet to help write her 3 resumes as it was from that list we found that she was clearly marketable in 3 different ways. I highly suggest that you follow the same process and utilize your friends, family and those who you respect to do this. You may not be able to pull out all of the words that positively represent you right now! It was really easy for me to find words to describe Shelby and from that she was able to find more. We didn’t use all of the words I thought of but it helped!

Like she said this exercise helped her build the rest of what she needed to focus for her interviews, resume’s, networking, etc. Once you have this it can be easier. She even has business cards with her contact information and her key words on them.

Share with the people in your life that you are looking and what you are looking for, and ask them to tell their friends and co-workers. This is an automatic marketing tool that is free.
