Coffee Suggestions

The good news is I put a note on Facebook saying I was considering a quest for good coffee and I got quite a few suggestions on where to start! How cool is that? Here is what I have received so far.

  • Dutch Brothers is nice here in town.
  • If you like non-bitter coffee, Coffee Fool (www.coffeefool.com) is a good place I order from.
  • Try out Stumptown...
  • Beveland St Coffee (the place I was telling you about, behind Lowe's off 217 in Tigard) -7357 SW Beveland RdPortland, OR 97223
  • There's Java Mama's off Scholl's Ferry (I don't remember the cross street). Good coffee, nice atmosphere, locally owned. - Scholls Ferry cafe hours are: M-F 6 AM to 5 PM SAT 7 AM to 5 PM SUN 8 AM to 3 PM Located at 10115 SW Nimbus Ave. Phone the Scholls Ferry cafe at (503)-968-1892.
  • Peet's Coffee
  • Coffee Emergency - Guatemalan Palo Alto Azul
Now I need to work on my methodology for my quest for good coffee. I think I will need to divide up the categories for testing. I feel there is a great opportunity to taste coffee at the local establishments thus combining the preparation along with the beans themselves. I also feel I should also taste beans under different preparation methods at home. Here are my thoughts so far.
On site tasting:
  • Taste espresso plain (Although I often like to add fun stuff to my coffee, I feel this could skew my findings.)
  • Taste house coffee blends
Home process preparation:
  • French press preparation
  • Saeco automated machine preparation - Espresso (Good thing the ex-boyfriend left this at my house, I knew there would be a good use for this huge machine.)
  • Krups espresso machine preparation - Espresso (Some of you are cringing at my Krups machine--you know who are, you coffee snobs :) -- it must be done as the bean that tastes good on this machine should be identified)
  • Drip machine preparation (yes this means I will likely have to use my inexpensive coffee grinder which I have already been informed is not adequate :0 )
This seems like a good start. Gosh I wonder if I should also consider store bought pre-ground coffee as well? Maybe it would be best to concentrate on the above first.

Gosh I wonder if I should also consider store bought pre-ground coffee as well? OMG, Paula - you are totally just saying that to get a rise out of me, right? Or maybe you plan on using it as your control group of what good coffee should NOT taste like...yeah, I'm sure that's it.

Whew. Thought I might have to do an intervention for a second, there!
